Korcula
Island Korcula tour
Korcula Island lies in the central Dalmatian archipelago. Korcula is known for its dense forest, leading the ancient Greeks to christen it Black Korcula, or Korkyra Melaina.
Legend has it that Prince Antenor of Troy founded the settlement here, and according to local tradition, Marco Polo was born in Korcula in 1254 to an established family of merchants. Although there is no proof of this claim, his alleged birthplace can still be viewed on Korcula Island.
The main resort, Korcula Town, is affectionately known as Little Dubrovnik because of the similarities between the towns' medieval squares, churches and houses. The town is notable for its statute dating back to 1214 which prohibited slavery, making Korcula Island the first place in the world to outlaw the practice.
